The paper sheds light on Georgia's foreign relations at the closing stage of World War One (from November 1917 almost to the end of 1918). A general outline is given of the political factors that determined the secession from Russia of Georgia and Transcaucasia, and the formation of sovereign states. Germany's decisive role in providing the foreign political and diplomatic backing for the formation of an independent Georgian state - the Georgian Democratic Republic.
