The Army and Society in Georgia

This issue presents a document Joint Statement of the Russian Federation and Georgia, Istanbul, 17 November 1999, followed by the interview of Koba Liklikadze with David Tevzadze, The Defence Minister Of Georgia, where they speak about the military reform, defence budget, financial management and spending, officers training, etc; The article OSCE Summit in Istanbul and Georgia, by Vakhtang Maisaia, International expert for SIAC, USA, speaks about the important aspects of the document  the Joint Statement of the Russian Federation and Georgia signed on November 17, which requires Russia to disband and withdraw its Vaziani (near Tbilisi) and Guduata (Abkhazia) military bases by July 2001 and reduce equipment in the remaining two ones - Akhalkalaki (southern Georgia) and Batumi (Adjaria). This document has been adopted on the OSCE summit in Istanbul; Koba Liklikadze in his CIS And Georgia, tells us about Georgia's decision to withdraw, together with Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan, from the CIS collective security treaty. The Issue also includes Military Chronicle which covers questions of State security, conflict zones, conflicts in Chechnya and Georgia, army building and army life, visits, negotiations, co-operation,  etc. The chronicle based on the information from the Georgian media. The issue followed with the Digest of the Georgian Press.
